The pump vanes fling the fluid to the outside of the pump where it can enter the engine. The purpose of a car water pump is to push coolant through the cars engine block radiator and hoses to get the engine heat away from the system.

The inlet to the pump is located near the center so that fluid returning from the radiator hits the pump vanes. Most frequently the water pump drives off the crankshaft pulley or the crankshaft itself. It is the part that continually pumps coolant to your vehicles engine so that it doesnt overheat.

Every water pump has something called a weep hole. It is driven by a serpentine belt aka accessory belt or auxiliary belt from the crankshaft pulley. A water pump is vital to a car engines operation because it ensures the coolant keeps moving through the engine block hoses and radiator and maintains an optimum operating temperature.

As the car engine runs the fan belt turns turning the axle at the center of the water pump.
